Every year in San Angelo, 20 people under the age of 40 are recognized for professionalism, community service and leadership through the 20 Under 40 program.
Every year since 2012, 20 San Angelo area residents under the age of 40 are recognized for their professionalism, community service and leadership through the prestigious 20 Under 40 program. Grace Media, now for the second consecutive year, has had the privilege of organizing the program, a renowned local event that includes a ticketed awards banquet, and magazine with photographs and profiles of each winner. The program has been running, now in it’s eighth year, with the support of sponsorships. Last year presenting sponsorship was contributed by TimeClock Plus with supporting sponsorship contributed by Shannon, First Financial Bank, The City of San Angelo, HEB, ASU, Stemmed Designs, Howard College and CREO.
Q: How does 20 Under 40 work?
A: Twenty working professionals in San Angelo are recognized for their community service and leadership abilities. A panel of four judges who are leaders in the community selects these individuals. A prestigious awards banquet is held at the end of the year for the honorees, as well as their friends and family, and a magazine is published with a profile about each of the 20 award winners.
Q: How can I nominate someone?
A: The nomination period lasts one month. Anyone (a mother, friend, spouse, sibling, co-worker, etcetera) may nominate an individual they deem deserving of recognition for their work, community service, and leadership qualities. The nominator must fill out and submit an online nomination form that details three specific areas: information about the nominee, their community service and their leadership qualities.

Q: When does the list of winners become public?
A: With social media being what it is today, it’s impossible to keep the winners a secret. In mid-September, the judges work together to select the 20 winners from the pool of applicants; a few days later the honorees are announced. Much planning goes into execution once they are selected. Scheduling 20 busy professionals and community service members for interviews and photo shoots is quite an undertaking.
Q: When is the event, what happens there and how can the community attend?
A: The event will be at the McNease Convention Center on December 5. The event is set up to have a mingling hour so that the honorees and their guests, sponsors and attendees all have an opportunity to network or share a drink together to celebrate the occasion. A dinner is then served, prepared by a local chef Carlos Estrada of Riverview Restaurant. A community leader will then then discuss leadership. (Last year, the keynote speaker was San Angelo Chamber of Commerce President Bruce Partain).
The awards presentation is the highlight of the evening. The presenting sponsor (which last year was TimeClock Plus) takes the stage, and each honoree is called up to receive their award. As they come up to the stage, the video produced during one of their interviews is played and the audience is able to get a glimpse of the honoree’s perspective on leadership. The event then concludes.
20 Under 40 recognizes professional and civic excellence, but it cannot happen without the public’s nominations. As the years have gone by, we’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response, but we’ve also had feedback regarding nominees not being selected despite submissions. The key is elaboration and detail in the nomination. We receive over 100 nominations, so the information on the individual has to stand out.

The judges, highly regarded in the community in their own right, are able to identify fellow leaders from the nomination submissions. They are unbiased and honored to play a role in recognizing San Angelo’s standouts. We all look forward to receiving nominations and learning more about our unsung community leaders. Please submit any questions or feedback regarding 20 Under 40 to firstname.lastname@example.org, and thank you in advance for your nominations!
